Safety is a symbol in the book. It symbolizes what Eddie's job at the pier was. He was a maintenance man. He had to make sure that all of the rides worked properly. His daily tasks included checking for loose bolts, rusty nails, and creaking wooden boards. He also rode each ride daily. He'd do this to make sure that the brakes worked correctly. He tried to keep everybody out of harms way.

A fist symbolizes Eddie's dad. He was very violent and abusive to his sons. He was always drunk and that's why he beat them. For example, he came home drunk one night and he made Eddie and Joe lay facedown on the bed. He then beat them repeatedly with a belt. He wasn't a very loving person to his children. He would get drunk and take his anger out on them.

The key symbolizes that no matter how small something is, it can still make a big difference between life and death. The key had caused a pulley to lock and scrape against a cable causing it to tear. If the cable hadn't tore, the cart wouldn't have fell. If the cart hadn't fell Eddie would not have died.

The baseball symbolizes that the smallest act can make the biggest difference. If Eddie hadn't chased the baseball in the street he wouldn't have caused the Blue Man to swerve. If he hadn't swerved, he would not have a heart attack and died.
