Birthday cake symbolizes the connection Eddie had with his family. In the book, we read about some of Eddie's birthdays. At every birthday party, there was a cake. Marguerite always made sure that Eddie had a cake. This shows the love and support Eddie got from his family. After Eddie's wife and parents died, he didn't have anymore family, so he stopped eating cake. He no longer had a family to love and support him, so he didn't have a reason to eat cake.

Salt water taffy symbolizes Eddie and Marguerite's lives together. Taffy is sweet like candy and salt water makes you think of tears. This symbolizes their lives because Eddie and Marguerite often had their ups and downs. For example, they wanted to adopt kids because Marguerite couldn't have kids. Eddie was upset about that. They lost all of their money after Eddie was wounded in the war. Marguerite was upset with Eddie about that. They went through 6 months of silence, but they were still able to rekindle their love for each other.

Pipe cleaners symbolizes the relationship Eddie had with the kids at the pier. He had a very good relationship with the kids. They would always make him smile and he'd do the same for them. He would take the pipe cleaners and turn them into animals anytime the kids asked. He was able to make a difference in their lives by doing that. This just shows that the smallest thing you do can make the biggest difference in the life of someone else.

The Ferris Wheel symbolizes the cycle of love between Eddie and Marguerite. The Ferris Wheel has no beginning and no end. Their love never ended. Even after Marguerite died, he never stopped loving her. Through the good times and the bad times, they still had love for each other. The Ferris Wheel also has ups and downs. Eddie and Marguerite had their ups and downs too. They would fight and be mad at each other, but they always loved each other.
